CW1: Tutor-led tour of Salts Level A mine adit (tunnel) with horizontal access when some of the features of mineralization and evidence of extraction methods are explained. GW IS6(C6) Salt’s Level Base Map
CW2: Tutor-led tour of Ecton Hill Visiting the surface features of former mining activity, and collecting mineral specimens for chemical analysis. GW1 SS1 Map of Ecton Hill and its Mines
CW3A: Student practical (alternative to CW3B) Chemical analysis of mineral samples found during the tour of Ecton Hill when visiting the mine spoil heaps. Emphasis is on the practical work and interpretation of the chemical reactions
CW3B: Student practical (alternative to CW3A) Chemical analysis of mineral samples found during the tour of Ecton Hill when visiting the mine spoil heaps. There is more emphasis on the mineralogy and there is an investigative approach, based on the Periodic Table.
Possible extensions (time permitting).
Both CW3A and CW3B may be extended to include the chemistry of transition metal complex ions. CW4: Chemistry of Black Powder. Student practical or teacher demonstration on the preparation and ignition of Black powder CW4 SS1 Chemistry of Black powder
GW7: Mineral separation. Separation of mineral mixtures by two methods, both based on density differences, but differing according to the particle size. GW7 What makes an ore deposit worth working? GW7 SS1 What makes an ore deposit worth working?
GW2, GW3 and GW4 are also topics with a strong Chemistry input. . |

Please read these summaries before filling in the on-line booking form. A day visit to Ecton includes a tour of Salt’s Level (CW1), a tour of Ecton Hill (CW2), and student practical (either CW3A or CW3B). In addition, there is normally time for one of the listed extensions. Before your visit, when you speak to one of the Tutors for that day, you need to specify which of the options CW3A/CW3B you prefer and which extension you prefer (choice could possibly be limited by the time available). Once you have agreed your itinerary with the EHFSA, you will need to download the appropriate printed material from the website (shown in Brown but will change when the link is activated). At the very minimum, sufficient student sheets should be printed for members of the party covering the topics chosen for the day’s visit. |
